A. ROOTS OF RHYTHM
ROOTS OF RHYTHM INTRODUCTION (RORI) This 4-hour workshop serves to introduce music and non-music teachers to the Roots of Rhythm world drumming curriculum with simple instrument making and play-along exercises. It provides an overview to Dr. Woodson's 16 chapter teachers guide that includes a review of student activity sheets and active listening to authentic recordings. Teachers begin to learn ways to use this multidisciplinary material to address K-12 content standards through lessons in music, social studies, geography, history, science, and art.
This 3-day workshop begins with the ROR Introduction then provides training material that enables attendees to learn how to teach the curriculum to other teachers. As a 16-hour workshop it provides an opportunity to become certified to train other adults about the ROR curriculum. Included is a detailed step-by-step instruction manual that covers a 12-week course. While teachers can take any 1 or 2 days, those who satisfactorily complete all 3 days of training will be qualified to receive certification as ROR instructor. ROOTS OF RHYTHM LEVEL I (RORC-I) The ROR college graduate course provides three levels for 5 consecutive days, or 35 hours. In this first level, teachers go through chapters 1-10 in detail, including basic hand and stick drumming techniques, listening and play-along exercises, making simple world percussion instruments, and learning to read and compose in the graphic box notation system called TUBS. The course comes with free copies of the ROR curriculum and CD. Two college credits are available through Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio. ROOTS OF RHYTHM LEVEL II (RORC-II) Level II of the ROR college graduate course is for 5 consecutive days, or 35 hours. In this second level, teachers review chapters 1-10 and then cover chapters 11-16 in detail, including intermediate hand and stick drumming techniques, listening and play-along exercises, making intermediate world percussion instruments, and reading and composing in the graphic TUBS notation. The course comes with free copies of the ROR curriculum and CDs chapters 11-16. Two college credits are available through Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio. ROOTS OF RHYTHM LEVEL III (RORC-III) Level III of the ROR college graduate course provides 5 consecutive days, or 35 hours of instruction.
