6 Types of Teacher Workshops by Dr. Craig Woodson 14 Workshops available nationwide March to August 2011

For Music Teachers, Non-Music Teachers, Musicians, Health Care and Corporate Professionals


A. Roots of Rhythm - World Drumming and Instrument Making (ROR) 5 in Ohio, California, and Arizona

  • Make and play drums from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas
  • Use the free, online ROR teacher's guide to practice and teach world drumming and rhythms
  • Teach cross-curricular elements including music, science, math, art, social studies, and language arts
  • Workshop types: Introduction (RORI in CA), Levels I-III (RORC in OH & CA), Training (RORT in AZ)


    ROR workshops are either funded by PMC & NAMM or by Ethnomusic, Inc.


B. K-8 World Musical Instrument Making (WIM) 4 in Ohio & California

  • Make up to 36 musical instruments from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas
  • Use all families of sound: drums, idiophones, strings and wind instruments
  • Teach world music along with core academic subjects by making simple instruments
  • Workshop types: Introduction (WIMI in OH and CA) and course (WIMC in OH)


C. Drum Circles for Conflict Resolution (DCR) 2 in Ohio

  • Make drums for his approach to drum circles and the Remo Health Rhythms protocol
  • Use Dr. Woodson's world music approach to conflict resolution called 'Ethnomusic Therapy'
  • Teach therapeutic ways of resolving conflict through drum circles
  • Workshop types: Introduction (DCRI in OH) and Course (DCRC in OH)


D. African Drumming and Drum Making (ADM) 1 in Ohio

  • Make and play simple instruments based on designs from Ghana and Guinea
  • Use authentic drumming from Ghana and Guinea, West Africa
  • Teach music, science, history, cultural awareness, art and language arts with this curriculum
  • Workshop type: Introduction (ADMI in OH)


E. Make and Play Percussion for K-8 Classroom Drum Circles (CDC) 1 in Ohio

  • Make and play the 5 standard percussion instruments used in drum circles
  • Use basic facilitation techniques and activities for use in the K-8 classroom
  • Teach drum circles to improve skills in K-8 classroom management
  • Workshop types: Introduction (CDCI in OH)


F. Sound Shapes for K-8 Classrooms (SSC) 1 in Ohio

  • Make simple sets of these instruments with Dr. Woodson's invention, Handle-Leg Connectors
  • Use Sound Shape drums to create ways of making strings, winds, and idiophones
  • Teach polyrhythms, graphic composition, and scientific principles with Sound Shapes
  • Workshop type: Introduction (SCCI in OH)


Topic Codes: 'Introductions' are 4-hour workshops; the 'Training' is a ROR course that certifies attendees to teach teachers; 'Courses' are 35-hour workshops with college credit available--ROR has 3 levels.
