B. K-8 WORLD MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MAKING (WIM)
- Make up to 36 musical instruments from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas
- Use all families of sound: drums, idiophones, strings and wind instruments
- Teach world music along with core academic subjects by making simple instruments
- Workshop types: Introduction (WIMI in OH and CA) and course (WIMC in OH)
2 graduate credits are available for #11 and #12 through Ashland University at a cost of $400 per course
K-8 WORLD MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MAKING INTRODUCTION (WIMI)
- Each 4-hour workshops introduces music and non-music teachers to the making of 5 simple musical instruments for K-8 classrooms.
- It provides an overview of Dr. Woodson's approach to making wind, string, drum, and idiophone instruments based on ideas from around the world.
- Attendees will receive notes on the projects that include ways of composing and performing music for each instrument.
- He will discuss how these craft activities can be used to teach many disciplines including music, art, science, math, and language arts.
- No special skills are need and all tools and materials are provided.
K-8 WORLD MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MAKING COURSE (WIMC)
- This graduate level course provides 5 consecutive days, or 35 hours of instruction.
- Teachers go through the making of 36 musical instruments in great detail, from simple to more complex technologies that require some hammering and sawing.
- The activities include listening and play-along exercises along with reading and composing in several types of notations.
- The course comes with free copies of the instrument making notes.
- Two college credits are available through Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio. These credits come after satisfactorily completing the 5 days and require a final paper.
